As a growing child in the sixties, I would read with awe, regarding the lives of the then leaders who had fought for India's freedom. Pt Jawaharlal Nehru was the Prime Minister and everyone felt very safe under his leadership. The country was progressing for the first time in a thousand years under the leadership of Indians. There was all round confidence and hope that together we will build a great country.
I still, clearly remember, the genuine sadness that the people throught India felt when Nehru passed away. However, they all beleived that he had led by example and hoped thatthe leaders to follow would be, if not as tall as him ,atleast moulded in his love for the country.
However in reality most of our leaders love money and power far more than their country. They are like hungry vultures, who the moment they get elected as MPs or MLAs, start feeding on the treasuries. All of us are aware how the wealth of a good majority of our netas, gets multiplied, many fold after they get elected.
The surprisingly tremendous tolerant nature of our citizens is also to a large extent responsible for this brazen abuse of trust by most of our leaders. The fact that, tainted leaders get reelected again and again ,is a case in point.
There seems to be now a hint of change in the attitude of the citizens, especially the younger ones, towards misuse of the trust, placed by the electorate, in their leaders, most of whose sole aim is to amass wealth for generations to come. The
A lot of credit for this change should go to Anna Hazare and his team of dedicated colleauges like Kejriwal and Kiran Bedi. Anna has been able to attract the youth of the country, to support his crusade against corruption and setting up a Janlokpal at the Centre. Anna is leading by his own example. A man of simple needs and high moral principles, he is able to challenge the mightiest. The moral power he possesses, is far superior, to the combined power of the State.
In today's times when corruption is eroding our system and lowering the image of ourselves and our country, it is reassuring that there are persons like Anna in our midst. It is the tragedy of our system, that an honest person like Dr Manmohan Singh is seen protecting corrupt colloeagues. Anna's crusade against corruption should be supported whole heartedly by all right thinking citizens. An alert media and aware citizens are the reason why Raja, Kanimori, Kalmadi etc are in jail.
That is why Anna's fast on August 16th is very critical and it must be supported at all costs by one and all. It must succeed in its aims.
Long live Anna and his followers. May their tribe increase.
